United World Wrestling Takes Stand Against Detention of Wrestlers and Threatens Ban if Election Timeline is Not Met

The meeting between the protesting wrestlers and India's sports minister, Anurag Thakur, resulted in an agreement of sorts. The government has committed to completing the police investigation of the former head of the wrestling federation by June 15, which was one of the five demands made by the wrestlers. The other demands include holding elections to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) by June 30, barring the former president and his associates from standing for elections, establishing an internal complaints committee within the WFI headed by a woman, and withdrawing all police cases against the protesting wrestlers.

The wrestlers have agreed to put their protest on hold until June 15. Bajrang Punia, one of the prominent wrestlers, expressed satisfaction with the assurances received from the minister. He mentioned that the minister assured them that the police investigation would be completed by June 15, ensuring the safety of the protesting wrestlers and the withdrawal of FIRs filed against them. However, Bajrang Punia also stated that if the investigation is not concluded by June 15, they would continue their protest.

The meeting between the wrestlers and the minister took place after the wrestlers had initially called off their protest in January. The wrestlers will now discuss the minister's assurances with the people supporting their cause, including Khap panchayats (traditional village councils), women's organizations, farmers' groups, and student associations. They plan to make a decision in the next 1-2 days based on these discussions.

Regarding the elections of the WFI, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has been slow in initiating the election proceedings, which has raised concerns about a possible suspension of the WFI by the United World Wrestling (UWW). The IOA had formed a three-member ad-hoc committee to conduct the WFI elections, but the appointment of the third member, a retired high-court judge, is still pending. The UWW had warned that if the elections are not held within the stipulated time frame, the WFI could face suspension, and Indian wrestlers may have to compete under a neutral flag at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik, have not competed in any international events in 2023 due to their ongoing protests. The upcoming Asian Games trials are scheduled to be held from June 22-25 in New Delhi, and the protesting wrestlers will also be allowed to compete in those trials if they wish to do so.

Overall, while the meeting with the sports minister has resulted in some progress, the resolution of all the demands and concerns raised by the wrestlers is still ongoing.
